A 26-year-old Toronto man is facing a slew of charges in connection with a jewelry store robbery that ended with a suspect being shot by a security guard.

Police say the incident happened around 2 p.m. Thursday when an armed man entered the Jewellery Exchange (on Eglinton Avenue East) in the city's east end.

It's alleged that the man donned a mask and gloves before going into the jewelry store and confronting two employees at the display counter.

Police say the man threatened both employees, pointed a handgun at their heads, and made demands for jewelry.

An armed, uniformed security guard then confronted the man and police say the guard fired several times at the suspect, who dropped his loaded firearm and fled to his vehicle after being hit.

Police say the man was located by officers who administered first aid and that he was then taken by ambulance to hospital.

Arthavan Rehnu-Vasanthakumar faces 11 charges including armed robbery, using a disguise with intent and several firearms-related offences.
