Ottawa police say a man is in custody and charges are pending after an overnight stabbing that left another man with life-threatening injuries.

Police say officers responded to a 911 call about an altercation between two men (on Cartier Street) shortly after 1:20 a.m.

A 28-year-old man was found suffering from critical injuries as a result of the stabbing and was rushed to hospital where his condition has since been upgraded to stable.

Officers arrested a 21-year-old man a short while later.

No names or other details were immediately released.

Police say the major crime section has taken over the investigation due to the serious nature of the victim's injuries.
