A man accused in the 2009 hit-and-run death of a 27-year-old man in Toronto pleaded guilty to manslaughter on Monday and was sentenced to eight and a half years in jail.

Agustin Caruso was arrested in the death of Christopher Skinner in 2013.

Skinner was struck and killed in downtown Toronto six years ago, while walking home after a gathering with family and friends.

Police have said Skinner got into an altercation with several people in an SUV, and was knocked to the ground and beaten by its male occupants before the vehicle's driver allegedly ran him over moments later.

Caruso, who was charged with second-degree murder, pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of manslaughter on Monday. With credit for time served, his sentence means he has a little over six years left to serve behind bars.

Caruso, who was 19 at the time, said in court that he was the driver of the vehicle that ran over Skinner.

He admitted he knew Skinner was lying on the roadway when he got back into his SUV and then drove forward. However, he maintains he did not run Skinner over intentionally.

Caruso said he was intoxicated by drugs and alcohol at the time of Skinner's death.

Three other men also face charges in the case. (680News)
