Three people are dead and a dozen more have been injured in a multi-vehicle crash on Highway 401 at Whitby, Ont., just east of Toronto.

Provincial police say the injuries range from serious to life-threatening.

A number of air ambulances were dispatched to the scene, however, no information concerning the deceased has been released.

The accident happened late Friday night in the highway's west-bound lanes and involved about 15 vehicles, including four tractor-trailers.

At least one vehicle was pinned under one of the big trucks.

The highway, which is among Canada's busiest, was closed in both directions at the accident site and police said it wouldn't reopen until around noon local time Saturday.

The cause of the deadly pileup remains under investigation.
