The Ontario Liberal Party has announced its candidate who will take on the newly elected Progressive Conservative leader in an upcoming byelection.

The party has selected Fred Larsen — a community advocate, educator and volunteer — to run for the Simcoe North riding.

He will try to stop Tory Leader Patrick Brown from getting a seat in the legislature in the Sept. 3 byelection.

Veteran Simcoe North Tory MPP Garfield Dunlop stepped aside last week to open up an opportunity for Brown.

Premier Kathleen Wynne didn't want to call a byelection during the federal campaign, but changed her mind after Brown said he wasn't concerned about simultaneous federal electioneering confusing voters in the riding.
