Police are looking for a man accused of prompting a high-speed police chase with a woman and a baby in his vehicle.

York Regional Police say they were called to a parking lot in Markham, Ont., late Wednesday evening when a 27-year-old woman began shouting for bystanders to call the police.

They say they arrived to find the woman, a 16-month-old child and a male driver in a red Pontiac Grand Am that drove straight at oncoming cruisers and narrowly avoided colliding with them.

Police abandoned the chase for the safety of the passengers, but got word that the vehicle had surfaced in Toronto a few hours later on Thursday morning.

The driver had fled, but the woman and child were found unharmed.

Toronto police Const. Victor Kwong says the suspect vehicle also matches the description of a car believed to be tailing two people as they travelled on a city bus early Wednesday evening. Kwong could not confirm if the same person was behind the wheel in both incidents.

York police say they are working to identify the suspect and are calling on any witnesses to come forward with information.
