Police investigating a shooting which killed a woman outside a Toronto nightclub earlier this year released a security video of "vehicles of interest" on Wednesday and appealed for witnesses to come forward.
A 32-year-old bartender, Jelena Loncar, died in the shooting around 3 a.m. on Aug. 26 outside the C Lounge in downtown Toronto.
An unidentified male, who police believe was the intended target, was seriously wounded. He has since been released from hospital and is co-operating with investigators.
"There is nothing in Jelena's lifestyle, background, friends that would indicate she was targeted," lead investigator Det.-Sgt. Debbie Harris told a news conference Wednesday.
Harris said Loncar was in the area to attend a friend's birthday party and to perform at an establishment in the entertainment district.
Security video shows what police called three "vehicles of interest" arriving at the scene of the shooting and a group of people exiting the cars.
It is alleged that the same vehicles were observed fleeing a parking lot near a different location, 689 The Queensway, where there was an exchange of gunfire earlier in the night, and driving directly to the Wellington Street where the fatal shooting occurred.
Harris appealed for witnesses from both sites to come forward.
"They may not have realized that the shots fired at 689 The Queensway, inevitably ended up being the same persons that have now taken the life of Jelena Loncar," she said.
Police are looking for a person of interest, described as a black male between 18 and 25 with a thin build. Harris said he was one of the occupants of the vehicles.
Police also appealed to rental car agencies to take note of the description of the vehicles that might help in the investigation.
Loncar's younger sister also spoke at the press conference.
"I just want to let you know that my sister was literally the nicest person in the world," Lana Loncar said, crying.
"And I didn't just lose a sister, I lost a best friend and a roommate and my parents lost their oldest child."
Harris said that despite the large number of possible suspects involved, investigators were not just focusing on street gangs, but looking at "any and all angles."
Harris said she was "extremely confident" that police will find those responsible for the shooting.
