Ontario's police watchdog is investigating an early-morning collision in Whitby.

The Special Investigations Unit says that at about 2 a.m., a Durham Region police officer was working on the RIDE spot-check program when he noticed a vehicle he thought was suspicious.

The SIU says the officer turned on his emergency lights, and the vehicle sped away.

The agency says moments later, the driver T-boned another vehicle.

The driver of the suspicious vehicle fled. The 25-year-old woman driving the other vehicle was taken to hospital with serious injuries.

The SIU is automatically called in to investigate incidents of serious injury or death when police are involved.
