Ontario's police watchdog is investigating a police pursuit that ended in a serious collision in downtown Toronto.

Paramedics say they treated seven people for serious injuries, including broken bones, and one person with injuries described as life-threatening.

The Special Investigations Unit says that around three o'clock Sunday morning, Toronto police tried to stop an SUV, but it took off and smashed into a car, which was operating as an Uber.

Investigators say the SUV was driven by a 16-year old male and that he had four passengers — another 16-year old boy, two 17-year old girls, and a 15-year old boy.

There were four people in the car — the 39-year old male driver, a 38-year old man and two women aged 32 and 27.

It took emergency crews about an hour to free one of the people from the mangled car.

The SIU has assigned eight investigators, two forensic investigators and one traffic reconstructionist to the investigation.

The watchdog is an arm's length agency that investigates reports involving police where there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault.
