Paramedics had a roadside bundle of joy on their hands when they helped deliver a baby on a Highway 401 on-ramp outside London, Ont.

Provincial police say they got a call just before 8 a.m. Wednesday of a mother about to give birth on the westbound ramp in Thames Centre.

They say paramedics were first on the scene and helped bring the newborn into the world.

Mother and child were then taken to hospital for follow-up care.

Const. Laurie Houghton says the officers who responded controlled traffic in the area so paramedics could do their job safely.

"Nature called and the baby wasn't going to wait another moment," Houghton says. "We were just happy we were able to assist."

She said it wasn't the kind of call officers usually get.

"I would have to say it is a rare occurrence," Houghton said.

"It's a great change to the flow of things as far as policing is concerned. It's the start of life, what a wonderful way to start your day and start your shift. I'm sure it's going to be a highlight for the officers."
