The body of an elderly woman has been found in a home which collapsed after a fire in Toronto's east end.

Toronto Fire's south division commander Andrew Kostiuk says the 81-year-old woman was found in her bed.

He says the woman, who was the only occupant of the home, was probably unaware of the fire.

The three-alarm blaze in a residential neighbourhood was called in around 4:30 a.m.

The fire began to spread to neighbouring homes, but division commander Bob O' Halloran says crews managed to save both of those homes.

The fire was the largest of three blazes that kept Toronto firefighters busy overnight.

Another fire in the city's west end just after 1 a.m. forced a family of five from their home (at Martingrove and Steeles).

The third blaze was downtown (on Queen Street near McCaul) where a fire broke out in a convenience store below some apartments.

No injuries have been reported in those two fires.
