Police in a city north of Toronto say a driver working through the ride-hailing Uber app has been charged with sexually assaulting a passenger.

York Regional Police say three women used Uber to arrange a shared ride home from a Toronto nightclub early on May 17.

Police say the driver picked up all three women and dropped two of them off at homes in York Region.

Investigators say when the driver was approaching the final drop-off in Vaughan, he told the woman that she needed to pay in cash or by other means.

Police say the woman felt uncomfortable and asked the driver to stop and let her out and it's alleged that when they got out of the car, the driver sexually assaulted her.

A spokeswoman for Uber calls it "a disturbing incident."

"Upon hearing of these reports, we immediately removed the driver in question from the Uber platform," Susie Heath said Wednesday in an email.

"We have been in touch with York Regional Police and will continue to assist in any way we can," she said.

Twenty-five-year-old Osamah al-Mandalawi, of Mississauga, Ont., is charged with sexual assault.
