Police say a woman found dead after a fire at a home in Pickering, east of Toronto, was the victim of a homicide.

The woman has been identified as 39-year-old Carmela Knight, who police say lived at the residence (on Pebblestone Crescent).

Her body was found Monday after fire crews extinguished a fire in a garage at the home.

Police say a post-mortem showed obvious signs of trauma to her body.

The investigation is continuing and no arrests have been made.

Police are appealing to the public to report any suspicious activity seen around the home Monday night.

It's Durham Region's third homicide of 2014.
