Quebec's police watchdog is investigating a fatal police shooting southeast of Quebec City.

The Independent Investigations Bureau says its preliminary investigation suggests a person in crisis stopped in the centre of a street in Saint-Georges-de-Beauce shortly before 7 p.m.

A provincial police officer arrived and the 25-year-old man apparently panicked when the officer activated the flashing lights on the cruiser.

A foot chase followed and ended in a parking lot where the man allegedly wounded the police officer with a knife.

The officer reportedly opened fire on the man, who died in hospital.

Eight bureau investigators have been assigned to case.
