Two people had to be rescued after fire broke out at an apartment building in Regina.

Firefighters used a ladder Friday to retrieve the people through a window on the third floor of the apartment on Parliament Avenue near the Golden Mile Shopping Centre.

Fire crews concentrated efforts on the roof of the building, with ladder trucks pouring water on flames.

Regina Fire and Protective Services says all 23 apartments in the building are a total loss.

Scott Vickers lived in the building and was driving home with his daughter around noon when he found his street blocked by fire trucks.

He said he's thankful he and his daughter weren't home when the fire broke out.

"I have my daughter with me. I've got to keep her safe and happy and calm," Vickers said.

His next step is to call Boardwalk and his insurance agency then he'll begin the more complicated job of finding a place to live and start over.

The Red Cross is available to help those left homeless by the fire. The agency can provide 72 hours of support in the form of vouchers for food, clothing and shelter.

Dave Kyba, planning and response co-ordinator with Red Cross Saskatchewan, said most people affected will likely stay with family or friends.

"It's a little nicer to do that and they have that emotional support as well," said Kyba.

Off-duty fire fighters had to be called in when another fire broke out at another apartment on Cambridge Avenue.
