It was a historic day Friday for many Ahmadiyya Muslims in Regina as their spiritual leader visited the city for the opening of the Mahmood Mosque.

"This is very important, said Maliha Shahid, a community spokesperson. "We live in a country such as Canada where there is a lot of diversity and ... multiculturalism and inclusion, and this mosque truely encompasses those values."

More than 2,000 people were present at the mosque during the day on Friday for the activities, which included prayers lead by the Caliph, Hazrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad.

He was also to lead a sermon at the new mosque on Friday night that was to be broadcast live to millions of people around the world on the Muslim satellite network Muslim Television Ahmadiyya.

The new mosque in Regina is the first purpose-built mosque in the province. It was built entirely by volunteers and with donations from the community.

The Caliph is currently touring Canada to spread the peaceful teachings of Muslim.

He made a stop in Saskatoon earlier this week.
