A 20-year-old Calgary man is facing three charges of attempted murder after a violent attack last week that sent a Regina cab driver to hospital in critical condition.

Police said they received several calls of a person in distressed and arrived at the scene to find people trying to help Iqbal Singh Sharma, a 31-year-old immigrant who had come to Canada with his wife and child just three months ago.

Police said it appears an altercation occurred inside the cab and continued, even though the driver stopped and tried to get out of the vehicle.

Besides the cab driver, who was stabbed in the neck, two other men were taken to hospital, though one was soon released.

A GoFundMe campaign to raise money for the family of the cab driver was started and has raised more than $13,000 since it was started on Friday.

Leroy Aaron Redwood, 20, of Calgary, appeared in court in Regina on Monday morning, where he was also charged with four counts of breach of recognizance.
