A truck driver has been charged in a four-vehicle crash that killed three teenage boys and seriously injured a flag person in east-central Saskatchewan last May.

The boys were in a car that was rear-ended by a semi-tractor trailer in a construction zone near Spalding, about 200 kilometres east of Saskatoon.

Their car was then pushed into a truck, which hit a 21-year-old flag person from British Columbia.

The truck crossed the highway and struck a construction vehicle.

The teens, who were students at Carrot River Junior Senior High School, died at the scene.

Normand Mark Joseph Lavoie, who is 28 and from Winnipeg, faces three charges of criminal negligence causing death and one count of criminal negligence causing bodily harm.

The teens who died were Justin Gaja, 14; Kristian Skalicky, 15; and Carter Stevenson, 17 — all from Carrot River.

The drivers of the truck, the construction vehicle and the semi weren't seriously hurt.

The boys were members of the Wildcats football team and had many friends.

"When you lose three young, vibrant, energetic boys like that — who are in the prime of their youth — it's very hard on the community,'' Carrot River Mayor Bob Gagne said at the time of the crash.

A driver in another four-vehicle crash near Blaine Lake in June was also charged Friday. That crash was in a construction zone as well, but no one was killed.
