Elections Saskatchewan says it's now accepting nominations of candidates for the March 2 byelection in the constituency of Saskatoon Meewasin.

The three main parties have each chosen a candidate for the byelection.

Brent Penner, a former Saskatoon police officer and currently executive director of the Downtown Saskatoon Business Improvement District, will carry the banner for the Saskatchewan Party.

Dr. Ryan Meili, who previously ran for the NDP leadership, will run for the New Democrats and provincial Liberal Leader Darrin Lamoureux has put his name in the race.

The Saskatchewan Green Party announced Monday that its leader, Shawn Setyo, will run too.

Elections Saskatchewan says nomination papers must be filed before 2 p.m. on Feb. 14.

The constituency of Saskatoon Meewasin was left vacant after Saskatchewan Party member Roger Parent died in November, two weeks after he was diagnosed with cancer.

Saskatchewan Premier Brad Wall has said he wanted to have the byelection before the legislature resumes sitting March 6.

The premier has said he expects a close race and a hard-fought campaign.
