Federal and provincial funding has been announced for a water treatment project that will allow more development in a Saskatchewan aboriginal community.

Ottawa and the province are each contributing just over $4.5 million to expand the Whitecap Dakota drinking water treatment plant and improve wastewater treatment.

The governments say the changes will help support more residential development around the Dakota Dunes golf course, which is expanding into a hotel with a convention centre and a business park.

The total cost of the water treatment projects is $13.6 million, with the Whitecap Dakota covering the remaining third.

Chief Darcy Bear says Whitecap already provides almost 700 jobs and 500 people commute to Whitecap from the Saskatoon area.

The treatment plant is expected to add another 300 jobs for the region. (CJWW)
