The mother-in-law of a man killed while changing a tire on a Saskatchewan highway is trying to raise money for his widow and young child.

Tanner Graf, who worked at a tire shop in Lloydminster, was struck by a semi on Friday night while he was fixing a flat for a motorist on Highway 16 near Paynton.

Katelyn Smiley was Graf's partner and the couple had a four-month-old daughter named Sadie.

Smiley's mother has started a GoFundMe fundraiser online to help her daughter.

Melissa White says Smiley needs to know there are people willing to help now that she is a single mother.

White says Graf, who was 22, was an attentive and loving father.

"My daughter has two other children and he took those two other children in as his own," White said. "He (was) such a family man. He is so loved by each and every person that knew him."

She said her daughter is trying to stay strong, but is "absolutely devastated."

"She lost the love of her life and she will never have that back."

Graf was the type of dad who would make time on his lunch breaks to go home and see his daughter, said White.

"There are so many videos of him dancing with Sadie and just being silly. He was so dedicated to that little girl.

"He was such an amazing person, a spouse, a dad, a brother, a son, a grandson, a friend to everyone who knew him. It's a tragic, tragic loss."

White, who was travelling to Saskatchewan from Nova Scotia on Monday, said a funeral is to be held later this week.
