A supervisor with SaskPower has been fined $28,000 after a workplace accident that killed a worker more than two years ago.
Kelvin Rowlett was sentenced Wednesday in Melfort provincial court after he was found guilty a week earlier of two counts under Saskatchewan's Employment Act.
Rowlett was fined $10,000 plus a $4,000 surcharge on each count, while one additional charge was dismissed.
Court heard the accident happened near Wakaw on Dec. 20, 2014, when the worker was electrocuted while repairing a high-voltage transmission line.
The charges against Rowlett stated that he failed to follow SaskPower safety procedure on assessing job hazards and also failed to ensure a jumper cable was used prior to the cutting of an energized shield wire, which resulted in the worker's death.
The Labour Relations and Workplace Safety department says supervisors are required to understand and follow provincially legislated health and safety requirements and ensure the health and safety of workers under their direction.
