A man accused of stealing $2.5 million from the Whitecap Dakota First Nation south of Saskatoon has fired his lawyer.

Hugo Gallegos dismissed Morris Bodnar when he appeared in court Thursday.

The case was adjourned to June 18.

Gallegos didn't plead guilty in court, but it was heard that he wants to go ahead with sentencing.

When Gallegos was charged in September 2013, he had fled to his home country of El Salvador, but voluntarily returned the following month.

Whitecap Dakota Chief Darcy Bear says the lengthy court proceedings have put a strain on the First Nation.

"Everybody was looking forward to having part of the process dealt with today and it's very disappointing for all our people," Bear said of the delay.

Bear said the accused hasn't turned over any of the money he's alleged to have stolen.
