A 36-year-old man has been sentenced to six months in jail after pleading guilty to failing to stop at the scene of a fatal accident.

Court was told Robert Barisoff was driving in the wee hours of the morning when he struck Kelton Desnomie, 18, who was walking along an off-ramp on Regina's ring road.

Court was told Barisoff stopped, and his passenger got out to check on Desnomie, who died almost immediately after suffering extensive head injuries.

Barisoff, however, did not get out of the vehicle and a short time later drove off, leaving both the body and his passenger behind.

Although Barisoff admitted having three or four drinks that night, it was ruled he was not impaired.

The judge also said Barisoff was at a low risk to reoffend, despite having a poor driving record, because he had no prior criminal record.

In her ruling, she added it was an accident in the purest sense of the word and that leaving the scene wasn't the cause of Desnomie's death.

Outside of court, Kelton's grandmother Lisa Desnomie said the only sentence that would have made her happy would have been life in prison.

"I don't ever get to see my grandson again. Never, never," she said.

"They're too easy on people that hurt other people like this. What are they saying to the public? It's okay to go and hit and run somebody and leave?"

The Crown had been was asking for a sentence between nine months and a year, while the defence wanted three months.
