Saskatoon police say officers used less lethal tactics such as firing beanbag rounds and a Taser at an armed suspect before shooting the man in the shoulder with a regular bullet.
The shootout in downtown Saskatoon on Wednesday happened as police were investigating a report of a stolen vehicle.
Acting Chief Mark Chatterbok says officers didn't use their regular guns until after the suspect fired at police.
The 34-year-old man was being treated in hospital for a gunshot wound.
No police officers were hurt and charges were pending.
Chatterbok says police are still investigating what happened.
"It is evident from the information we have that our officers used a great deal of restraint in responding to a very dangerous situation," Chatterbok said Thursday. (CJWW)
