A small Saskatchewan community is grieving the death of a boy who was hit by a train.

Flags outside the Radisson town office are at half-mast, which Mayor David Summers says is a sign of honour and respect for the 11-year-old's family.

RCMP say the child and another 13-year-old boy were both hit by the train just south of the community on Saturday.

The older boy escaped with only minor injuries and was treated at the scene.

Summers says they aren't releasing the boys' names, but says both are from Radisson and the families are well-known within the community.

Police say they are still investigating.

Summers says he doesn't know yet if there will be a community gathering, noting it depends on what the boy's family says.

"I think we're going to wait until we have a chance to talk to the family when they're ready to talk and see what they'd like," Summers said.

"We'll put on a community service if they want. Whatever they need, I want them to know we're here for them."

Radisson is about 50 kilometres northwest of Saskatoon along highway 16.
