A 34-year-old woman has been arrested in the death of a 70-year-old man in Melfort, Sask.

Candace Gail Moostoos faces a charge of second-degree murder after the body of Alpheus Burns was discovered in his home in the early morning hours on Monday.

Burns is a member of James Smith Cree Nation.

Chief Justin Burns says Alpheus Burns was his uncle and a respected elder in the community, adding the death has hit members of the First Nation hard.

"He was a nice guy, he did a lot of ceremonies with a lot of our people back home, he got involved with our youth especially during our cultural days," says Burns.

Police say Alpheus Burns and Moostoos were known to each other.

She made her first court appearance on Tuesday morning and was remanded in custody. Her next court appearance will be June 16.
