Joel Awich scored 19 points — with a couple of key baskets — as Cal Poly defeated Austin Peay 73-64 in the first round of the Maui Jim Invitational at Northern Colorado's court Saturday.
Awich made 7 of 11 shots with three coming from long range. David Nwaba added 16 points with four assists and four steals, and Jaylen Shead scored 10 points for the Mustangs (2-2).
Austin Peay, still searching for its first victory in four games, stayed close through the first half, holding a slim lead until Awich drained a 3-pointer just before the buzzer, sending the Mustangs into halftime ahead 34-32. Awich started the second half with a jumper to stretch the lead.
Chris Horton led the Governors with 20 points and 10 rebounds — his 38th double-double.
