Canyon Barry scored a career-high 31 points, including 4 of 9 from behind the arc, to lead College of Charleston to a 74-54 season-opening win over South Carolina State on Friday night.
Barry made 9 of 16 field goals and 9 of 10 free throws. Cameron Johnson, who was 5 of 10 from the floor, added a career-high 18 points for the Cougars.
Charleston held a slim 35-31 lead at the half but then slowed the Bulldogs in the second half, as South Carolina State made just 9 of 31 shots. The Cougars, who hit 37.5 per cent of their shots in the first half made 12 of 26 in the final period and won the half 39-23. The Cougars also made 8 of 23 from beyond the arc.
Greg Mortimer hit 5 of 7 from the floor, totalling 13 points and Gabe McCray added 12 for South Carolina State.
