Canada's men's volleyball team has qualified for the upcoming World Cup after sweeping Mexico on Friday at the NORCECA Champions Cup.

The Canadians took the three sets 25-12, 25-20 and 25-13 — guaranteeing them a top-two finish at the tournament and a berth into the 2015 FIVB World Cup.

Saskatoon's Gavin Schmitt contributed 12 points against Mexico, followed by Toon Van Lankvelt of Rivers, Man. with eight.

"This is important for us. First, we haven't qualified for the World Cup since 2003 and second, this is the first step to Rio," said Canada's head coach Glenn Hoag. "Competing at the World Cup will allow us to be exposed to playing the top teams."

The United States also beat Cuba on Friday 3-1 to guarantee a spot in the upcoming World Cup, which goes Sept. 8 to 23 in Japan.

Canada, ranked 14th in the world, will face the fifth-ranked Americans on Saturday.

"Tomorrow, against the U.S., will be a chance to play another strong opponent," said Canada's team captain Fred Winters of Victoria. "We play Bulgaria next week in world league, and the U.S. will be a nice tune up for us."

The 2015 FIVB World Cup is the first qualifier for the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.
