Tyler Cavanaugh had 21 points with 10 rebounds and George Washington beat Fordham 69-63 in an Atlantic 10 Conference opener on Sunday night.

Cavanaugh was 7 of 12 from the floor, and was one point shy of his career best. Patricio Garino scored 12 points and Yuta Watanabe chipped in 10 for the Colonials (12-2, 1-0), who have beaten Fordham in five-straight games.

Mandell Thomas and Antwoine Anderson scored 13 points apiece to lead the Rams (9-3, 0-1). Ryan Rhoomes added 12 points with nine rebounds.

The Colonials had an 11-point lead midway through the second half. Anderson scored seven points as part of a 13-5 spurt to pull the Rams to 59-56 with three minutes left. Cavanaugh answered with a jumper and the Colonials shot 8 of 8 from the line to seal it.
