The San Diego Chargers have re-signed tight end John Phillips as a precaution after Ladarius Green was diagnosed with a concussion.

Phillips was released when the team reduced its roster to 53 players. Green apparently was injured in practice Wednesday. He did not practice Thursday.

Green was expected to fill in for Antonio Gates, who is suspended without pay for the first four games after testing positive for PEDs.

To make room for Phillips on the roster, the Chargers waived rookie tackle Tyreek Burwell.

The Chargers open the season at home Sunday against Detroit.
