Five things to know about Day 16 of competition at the Rio Olympics:

FOND FAREWELL — The rain pouring into Maracana Stadium didn't seem to dampen the spirits of the Olympic athletes at the closing ceremony of the Rio Games. Swimming star Penny Oleksiak carried the flag for Canada, while the country's other athletes filed in behind wearing their trademark red mittens. Canada finished the Games with 22 medals, three more than their goal.

HELLO TOKYO — Tokyo's teaser presentation almost had a New York style vibe, that is until Hello Kitty made an appearance in the video. But the highlight was Japan's prime minister dressing as video game icon Super Mario and emerging in Maracana Stadium via Mario's trademark green pipe.

---

DREAM COME TRUE — The U.S. men's basketball team may have had some close calls in Rio, but the gold-medal game was not one of them. Led by 30 points from Kevin Durant, the Americans hammered Serbia 96-66 to claim their third straight Olympic title. Kyle Lowry led the U.S. with five assists, while Toronto Raptors teammate DeMar DeRozan chipped in with six points on 75 per cent shooting.

---

I WOULD RUN 26.2 MILES — Eliud Kipchoge of Kenya sloshed his way through drizzly conditions to the gold medal in the men's Olympic marathon. The hottest distance runner in the world beat Feyisa Lelisa of Ethiopia and American Galen Rupp. Eric Gillis of Antigonish, N.S., finished 10th, just missing the Canadian record.

---

LOCAL HEROES — With soccer star Neymar in a courtside seat cheering his countrymen, Brazil's men's volleyball team beat Italy 25-22, 28-26, 26-24 in the gold-medal match. It's the Brazilians' first Olympic title in 12 years since a championship at Athens in 2004. Brazil rebounded from a heartbreaking loss in the Olympic final four years ago in London.
