Eric Frenzel of Germany won his second Nordic Combined in two days to go top of the overall World Cup standings on Saturday.
The Olympic champion beat Akito Watabe of Japan in a similar scenario to Friday's race.
Runner-up after the ski jump, Frenzel started the 10-kilometre cross country four seconds behind Watabe. They shared the lead for most of the race until the German went ahead in the final kilometre.
Frenzel ended up beating Watabe by 24.9 seconds.
"I knew that if I made a long sprint to the finish I could earn some seconds from Akito," said Frenzel after earning his 10th straight victory in the Austrian resort, which will host the 2019 world championships.
Fabian Riessle came 1:27.7 back in third, and lost the overall lead to his German teammate. Frenzel has 471 points, Riessle 454.
"I took the lead in the standings at the same time last year so l am very happy," said Frenzel, who has won the overall title the past three seasons.
It was the second stage of the Nordic Combined Triple, which adds the results of all three competitions this weekend with the overall winner earning double World Cup points.
Despite his second straight win, Frenzel said he was not the obvious favourite to won the triple.
"Tomorrow we have two jumps. Akito is very consistent and very strong on the hill," he said. "If you are unlucky with the wind, you can easily lose a few meters so I definitely don't feel on the safe side yet."
Sunday's final event ends with a 15K cross country race.
