The Hawthorn Hawks dominated from the opening minutes to win their third Australian Football League title in a row, beating the West Coast Eagles 16.11 (107) to 8.13 (61) on Saturday in the Australian rules football grand final.

Before a crowd of 98,633 at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, the Hawks led by 19 points after the first quarter, 21 at halftime and 50 points after three quarters. The Hawks kicked nine of the first 10 goals, and Jack Gunston led the winners with four.

West Coast beat the Hawks in the opening playoff round, but under the AFL's second-chance format for the top four teams, Hawthorn played in the second round while the Eagles advanced straight to the semifinals.

It made the Hawks the first team since Brisbane in 2001-03 to win three consecutive premierships. Hawthorn has 13 league titles.

"We've had a few ups and downs this year, but the way the boys played and the intensity we've had over the past three games, I'm lost for words," Hawthorn captain Luke Hodge said.

It was the fourth AFL title for Hawthorn coach Alastair Clarkson.

"They're a very, very special band of boys, we've made a real special part of our history with their efforts throughout the course of this year, but particularly today," Clarkson said.
