Dakarai Henderson had 27 points and Aurimas Majauskas added 21 and 11 rebounds as Sam Houston State beat NAIA's St. Thomas (Texas) 114-92 on Tuesday night.
Ameer Jackson contributed 18 points, Jovante' Spivey had 11 and Jamal Williams chipped in 10 for the Bearkats (1-1), who bounced back from an 85-50 season-opening loss to SMU Saturday.
Sam Houston State made a school record 49 of 64 free throw attempts. The Bearkats made 30 of 57 field goal attempts while limiting the Celts to 45 per cent (27-60). They also dominated on the boards with a 47 to 26 edge.
St. Thomas took control early to grab a 26-14 lead at the midway point of the first half. The Bearkats battled back to lead 48-46 going into the break, then outscored St. Thomas 66-46 in the second period.
Byron Makel had 23 points and Jakobi Grigsby added 18 for the Celts.
