Less than a month after being released by England, Andy Farrell has been hired as the defence coach for Ireland's rugby team and will start the role after the Six Nations.

Farrell, a former England international in both rugby codes, is contracted with the Irish Rugby Football Union until the end of the 2019 Rugby World Cup.

Farrell spent four years as defence coach with England, and had the same role with the British and Irish Lions for their tour to Australia in 2013.

Ireland coach Joe Schmidt says "the quality of his delivery and breadth of his experience as well as the positive impact he had when coaching a number of our senior players during the 2013 Lions tour will add real value for us."
