Maurice Manificat of France and Therese Johaug of Norway won World Cup cross-country skiing free style races Saturday.

Manificat took the men's 15-kilometre event for his first victory of the season. He beat Martin Johnsrud Sundby of Norway, the overall World Cup leader, by 10.8 seconds while Sergey Ustiugov of Russia placed third, 13 seconds behind.

Alex Harvey of Saint Ferreol les Neiges, Que., finished seventh with a time of 34 minutes 46.2 seconds.

"The snow was really soft and completely different than (Friday) so it was extremely slow and I had to work the whole way," said Harvey. "I really wanted to try and catch on to someone but it seemed I skied alone the entire day which made things tough — especially in the windy parts of the course."

Harvey was in the top three for the first half of the race before fatigue set in.

Devon Kershaw, of Sudbury, Ont., finished 38th in 36:07.1 while Graeme Killick, of Fort McMurray, Alta., was 63rd (37:34.6). Knute Johnsgaard, of Whitehorse, was 76th (39:18.2).

Sundby was well ahead overall with 1,502 points, his teammate Finn Haagen Krogh a distant second with 917 after placing fifth, and another Norwegian, Petter Northug Jr., third on 801 after not competing Saturday.

Johaug underlined her dominance in cross-country skiing by winning the women's free style in a 1-2 Norwegian finish.

Johaug covered the 10-kilometre distance fastest for her 11th victory of the season. She edged Astrid Uhrenholdt Jacobsen by 4.6 seconds.

American Jessica Higgins was 9.3 seconds back in third for her second podium of the season.

Emily Nishikawa, of Whitehorse, was the top Canadian, finishing 44th in 27:30.2. Cendrine Browne, of St-Jerome, Que., was 54th in 28:32.9 while Whitehorse's Dahria Beatty was 57th in 28:58.2. Maya MacIsaac-Jones of Athabasca, Alta., was 61st in 30:01.6 and Katherine Stewart-Jones, of Chelsea, Que., was 62nd in 30:12.9.

Johaug leads the overall World Cup standings with 1,484 points, followed by another two Norwegians. Ingvild Flugstad Oestberg had 1,274 after finishing ninth, and Heidi Weng 1,090 following her sixth-place finish.

The relays are scheduled for Sunday.
