Canadian distance runner Lanni Marchant completed a rare Olympic double on Sunday.

The native of London, Ont., was the top Canadian in the women's marathon, less than two days after completing the 10,000 metres.

She finished Sunday's 42.195-kilometre race in two hour 33 minutes eight seconds, good for 24th overall.

Marchant was 25th in Friday's 10,000.

Krista DuChene of Brantford, Ont., a 39-year-old mother of three who's making her Olympic debut, was 35th in the marathon in a time of 2:35:29.

Jemima Jelagat Sumgong of Kenya won the race in 2:24:04.

The 32-year-old Marchant broke Silvia Ruegger's 28-year-old Canadian marathon record in 2013, when she ran 2:27:58.

She was originally told by Athletics Canada her focus would be the 10,000 metres in Rio. While coaches didn't gave her a firm no on running the marathon, she wasn't on the original list when determining the team for Rio, sparking a #LetLanniRun social media campaign. She was eventually given the green light to attempt the double.

Marchant won bronze in the 10,000 metres at last summer's Pan Am Games, and was fourth in the marathon at the Commonwealth Games in 2014. She's also balanced her track career with her other profession as a criminal lawyer.
