Baylor has fired longtime baseball coach Steve Smith after the Bears had their fewest wins since 1981.

Smith's firing after 21 seasons was announced in a release from the school Sunday, a day after the Bears lost 4-0 to Texas in the Big 12 tournament to finish with a 23-32 record.

The Bears have had three losing seasons in a row since winning the program's third Big 12 title in 2012, going 20-4 in conference play and 49-11 overall that season.

Smith was 744-523-1 at Baylor. The Bears went to 13 NCAA regionals during his time and made it to the College World Series in 2005.

Athletic director Ian McCaw said a nationwide search for Smith's replacement would begin immediately.
