British cycling star Mark Cavendish will start his 2016 season at the Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race in Victoria state next month, also making his debut for South Africa-based Team Dimension Data.

The 30-year-old Cavendish, who has won 26 stages on the Tour de France, last raced in Australia at the 2011 Tour Down Under. He signed with Team Dimension Data in September.

Leading Australians Simon Gerrans and Rohan Dennis are also confirmed for the Cadel Evans event.

Britain's Chris Froome has previously announced he will compete in the Herald Sun cycle tour in Victoria in February.
