French club Marseille says it has appointed Michel Gonzalez as its coach.

The former Real Madrid captain replaces Marcelo Bielsa who resigned earlier this month over a contract dispute.

The 52-year-old Gonzalez, who led Olympiakos to two Greek league titles, signed a two-year contract with Marseille.

Bielsa, the former Argentina coach widely credited with Marseille's return to prominence, resigned Aug. 9 over a contract dispute after the club allegedly amended the terms of a new deal.

Marseille finished fourth in the French league last season.
