Detrez Newsom ran for a 2-yard touchdown with two minutes left and Western Carolina beat VMI 24-20 on Saturday.
Newsom ran for 141 yards on 30 carries, and had five catches with a 75-yard touchdown catch in the third quarter. Troy Mitchell was 24 of 33 for 300 yards passing with two touchdowns for Western Carolina (7-4, 5-2).
Derrick Ziglar had 96 yards rushing and two touchdowns to lead VMI (2-9, 1-6). Dillion Christopher kicked field goals of 25 and 55 yards.
Logan Howard made a 25-yard field goal to give the Catamounts a 17-13 lead early in the fourth quarter. J.C Garvin forced and recovered a Newsom fumble at the Catamount 17, and Ziglar ran for a touchdown on the next play and a 20-17 Keydet lead with three minutes left.
Mitchell threw a 41-yard pass to Karnorris Benson, and Newsom ran in for the score on the next play.
