Northwestern defensive lineman Sean McEvilly has retired from football because of health issues.

The school says McEvilly, a sixth-year senior, decided to stop playing because of "chronic orthopedic issues." He sat out last season after playing in 19 games and making 13 starts from 2011-13.

The school also announced Wednesday that freshman linebacker Simba Short will miss the season because of an injury.
