New Zealand won the toss and looked to exploit cloudy conditions by sending England in to bat first at Edgbaston on Tuesday in the first of their five one-day internationals.
In its first match since the Cricket World Cup final in April, New Zealand will debut spin allrounder Mitchell Santner, effectively as the replacement for the retired Dan Vettori.
England, eliminated in the World Cup group stage with an eight-wicket thrashing from New Zealand, gave No. 7 batsman Sam Billings his first cap.
