Spanish Vuelta organizers say Belgian rider Kris Boeckmans is in stable condition after undergoing surgery to treat injuries sustained in a serious crash on Saturday.
Organizers said Sunday that doctors will consider waking Boeckmans from an induced coma on Monday.
The 28-year-old rider needed surgery overnight after sustaining a concussion, facial trauma, three broken ribs and an injured lung.
The unexpected pileup in the peloton happened on a straightaway 50 kilometres (31 miles) before the finish of the 182.5-kilometre (113.4-mile) stage from Puebla de Don Fadrique to Murcia.
