The Charlotte Hornets have agreed to a contract with free agent Jeremy Lin, a person familiar with the situation said Wednesday night.
The person spoke to The Associated Press on the condition of anonymity because the move cannot be announced until Thursday. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Lin essentially announced the deal, posting on his Instagram page Wednesday night "Lets goooooo!! #BuzzCity" and attached a photo of the Hornets' team logo.
Lin is entering his sixth NBA season. He had a brief but memorable stint with the New York Knicks in 2012 and also played for the Warriors, Rockets and Lakers.
The 26-year-old Lin played in 74 games last season for the Lakers, averaging 11.2 points and 4.6 assists. He shot 42.4 per cent from the field and 36.9 per cent from 3-point range.
He's expected to back up point guard Kemba Walker in Charlotte.
The 6-foot-3, 200-pound Lin shoots 43.9 per cent from the field and 34.9 per cent from beyond the arc. Walker shoots 39.5 per cent overall and 31.8 per cent on 3s.
It's the latest move by general manager Rich Cho, who has worked hard to revamp the roster after the team failed to make the playoffs last season.
Among the other new faces on the Hornets' roster this season include Nicolas Batum, Spencer Hawes, Jeremy Lamb and rookie Frank Kaminsky, the national player of the year in college last season.
Lin earned immense popularity with the Knicks during the "Linsanity" craze. After being claimed off waivers, Lin made his way into the starting lineup following a slew of injuries. He became the first NBA player to have at least 20 points and seven assists in his first five games.
The following year the Knicks allowed Lin to walk in free agency after the Rockets signed him to a three-year, $25 million contract. He spent two seasons in Houston before being traded to the Lakers.
