Sporting's Naldo was sent off with a direct red card for pushing Arouca's coach two minutes before Slimani's scored his last-gasp winner from a rebound.
Second-place FC Porto needed goals from Vincent Aboubakar in the 70th and Miguel Layun in the 84th to beat Setubal 2-0.
Benfica defeated Boavista 2-0 on goals from Goncalo Guedes in the 39th and substitute Mehdi Carcela-Gonzalez in the 88th.
Sporting leads FC Porto by five points and Benfica by eight, but both its rivals have a game to play.
