Spanish police say they have detained Rayo Vallecano defender Antonio Amaya for driving at 234 kilometres per hour (145 mph) and charged him with dangerous driving.

The Guardia Civil says the 32-year-old Amaya was stopped while at the wheel of a Porsche Panamera after police radar had detected him speeding on the M-301 road in Madrid's southern outskirts.

The alleged offence was recorded Tuesday on a section of road where the speed limit is 100 kph (62 mph).

The penalties for driving at such a speed could include a jail term or the payment of a large fine— depending on previous convictions — and the loss of the driving license.
