Sam Tomkins, the world's most expensive rugby league player, is returning to former club Wigan Warriors at the end of the NRL season after being allowed to cut short his contract with New Zealand Warriors.

Wigan announced the return of the England fullback on a four-year deal during halftime of its home match against Warrington Wolves in Europe's Super League on Thursday.

Wigan chairman Ian Lenegan says Tomkins' transfer fee is 200,000 pounds ($300,000).

Tomkins left Wigan to join the Auckland-based Warriors for the start of the 2014 season on a three-year deal, for what Wigan said was a world-record fee of a reported 700,000 pounds ($1 million). He recently asked the club if he could be released from his contract because he is homesick.
